STUDENT EXCHANGE WITH ECTS

Student exchange with ECTS is at the moment a topical issue at several faculties and it will become even more important in the near future, especially at those faculties who have not yet introduced the system. The Socrates program stresses the application of the ECTS-system, although it is not yet obliged to apply it.

The reference group on this theme exists of

 R. Möllby
 M. Vijande Vazquez
 J. Winand.

The group intends to present and discuss relevant topics on the implementation of the ECTS-system and to present a survey of practical issues.

Within the application of the ECTS-system three major elements seem to be very important:

 Learning Agreement
 Transcript of Records
 Information Package.

The learning agreement contains the courses the student will follow, the number of credits each course reflects and detailed information on the home and host university.
The Transcript of Records is a final confirmation of the program the student followed and therefore it is created after the study period.
The Information Package contains general information on the faculty/university like lodging, registration, insurance, language courses etc.

STUDENT EXCHANGE WITH ECTS

Student exchange with ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) is a topical issue at several faculties. It will become even more important in the near future because the SOCRATES Programme strongly recommends the application of the ECTS-system.

The objectives of this reference group are: to develop scientific analysis of the previous and future student exchange, such as quality assessment, reasons for failure, future career of ECTS students; to facilitate curriculum comparison and development; and to extend the ECTS principles to postgraduate exchange and other medicine related fields such as dentistry, biomedical sciences and paramedical professions. Members of this group are: Roland Möllby, Manuel Vijande Vazquez and Jacques Winand.

Jacques Winand started the plenary session with an extended list of practical advice for the implementation of the ECTS-system. In applying the ECTS-system three elements are of major importance, i.e. the Information Package, the Learning Agreement and the Transcript of Records. The Information Package contains general information about the university, the faculty, the living conditions and facilities of students and the academic curriculum. A Learning Agreement indicates the courses that should be followed by the outgoing student as well as the number of credits for each course. The Transcript of Records, a final confirmation of the courses the student followed, has to be sent to the home university when the student leaves.

Jean-Pierre Wauters, an invited expert, presented an overview of the number of student exchanges over the years between the University of Lausanne and various European partners. Moreover, he outlined the agreements with regard to student exchange, as in use at the University of Lausanne. The workshop was attended by 42 participants from 34 different medical faculties. During the workshop the important elements of an ECTS programme were discussed: agreement between faculties, information package, learning agreement (made before the student leaves the home faculty), selection of students (motivation, language, grades), calculation and transmission of credits, student reports, language course and coordination (both at institutional and departmental level). Finally it was concluded that both quality and flexibility at all levels are crucial prerequisites for a successful exchange programme.
